Fed holds US rates at 3.75%-4% in a 10-2 split vote - what it means for gold, oil and Pakistan
The US Fed kept rates unchanged on 28 October, but two members wanted a hike. Gold dipped, yields rose and oil stayed high. Here is what changed overnight.

The US Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75% to 4% on Wednesday night, as markets had expected. The surprise was in the vote: it was 10-2, and both dissenting members wanted a rate hike, not a hold.
That split matters more than the decision itself. It tells markets that the Fed is still leaning towards tighter money, and that is what moved gold, bond yields and the dollar overnight.
The Fed decision in brief
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Decision | Rates held at 3.75% to 4% |
| Vote | 10 in favour, 2 against |
| Dissenters | Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack |
| What they wanted | A quarter-point (0.25%) increase |
| Previous move | A hike in September, the first in three years |
| Next meeting | 8 and 9 December 2026 |
In its statement, the Fed said inflation "remains elevated" and repeated its aim of a timely return to its 2% goal.
Why the Fed is worried
US consumer prices rose 3.7% in the year to September, and core inflation, which leaves out food and energy, was 2.6%. Both readings came in above economists' forecasts, CBS News reported. Fuel is a big part of the problem, with crude oil trading above $100 a barrel.
So the Fed paused, but it did not sound relaxed. CoinDesk reported that markets had already priced out a hike for this meeting but fully priced in one for December. In other words, the decision on 28 October was the easy one. December is where the real debate lies.
How markets reacted overnight
- US bond yields rose. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed about 4 basis points to roughly 5.03%, according to CoinDesk and Finimize.
- Gold slipped, then steadied. Spot gold fell to around $4,035 to $4,040 an ounce soon after the decision, before recovering some ground later in the US session. Higher yields make gold, which pays no interest, less attractive.
- Oil stayed firm. Brent crude closed near $115 a barrel on Wednesday, and US crude near $102. Analysts quoted by Guardian Gold said the oil rally raises the risk of a tougher Fed, which weighed on gold.
- US shares ended the day with small gains.
What this means for Pakistan
The Fed sets rates for the US, but its tone travels. Three channels matter most for Pakistani households and businesses.
1. Fuel prices. Oil is already the biggest pressure point. From today, 29 October, the Petroleum Division has raised petrol by Rs1.85 to Rs377.91 a litre and diesel by Rs1.75 to Rs399.82. That is the second change in two days under daily pricing. Diesel is now just 18 paisa short of Rs400. Our earlier report explains how daily fuel pricing hits transporters and small firms.
| Fuel | 28 October | 29 October | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol | Rs376.06 | Rs377.91 | +Rs1.85 |
| High-speed diesel | Rs398.07 | Rs399.82 | +Rs1.75 |
2. Gold. Local Sarafa rates follow the world price and the rupee. Gold closed at Rs425,636 per tola on Wednesday after a Rs3,500 jump, as we reported in yesterday's gold rate update. The small overnight dip in world gold means today's local rate may not rise further, but the Sarafa association announces it later in the day. You can follow the daily trend on our rate tracker.
3. Interest rates at home. The State Bank of Pakistan raised its own policy rate to 12% this week. A Fed that keeps the door open to more hikes makes it harder for central banks in emerging markets to cut soon. Our explainer covers what the 12% rate means for loans and savings.
What to watch next
- US inflation data. The next price figures will shape the December decision more than anything said this week.
- Oil. If Brent stays above $110, diesel in Pakistan is likely to keep testing the Rs400 level under daily pricing.
- The 8-9 December Fed meeting. A hike there would be the second this year.
What you can do
- If you run a business with fuel-heavy costs, update your price sheet for diesel near Rs400 rather than waiting for a fall.
- If you plan to buy gold for a wedding or savings, compare the rate over a few days instead of reacting to one night's news.
- If you have a variable-rate loan, assume rates stay high into early 2027 when planning repayments.
