That is about Rs16,000 below the Rs425,636 we reported on 28 October, before the US Fed decision.

Why gold fell
The local rate follows the world price. On Saturday the international price of gold fell by $108 to $3,872 an ounce, a drop of about 2.7%, according to APP. Silver also fell by $1.42 to $49.10 an ounce.
The fall came a few days after the US Federal Reserve kept rates on hold but signalled that a hike in December is still possible. Higher US interest rates make gold, which pays no interest, less attractive to investors. Read what the Fed decision means for gold and Pakistan.
What it means if you are buying
- For a wedding or savings, a lower rate is a chance to buy, but prices can swing by Rs5,000 to Rs10,000 in a day. If you can, compare rates over a few days.
- Jewellery costs more than the Sarafa rate. Jewellers add making charges, and these can be a large part of the bill. Ask for the gold rate, the weight and the making charges separately on the receipt.
- Check the karat. Most jewellery in Pakistan is 22K or 21K, not 24K. Our tola, gram and karat guide in Urdu shows how to check the price yourself.
What to watch this week
- The world gold price on Monday, which sets the tone for the Sarafa rate.
- The US dollar and bond yields, which have been rising since the Fed meeting.
- The rupee's rate against the dollar. A weaker rupee pushes the local gold price up even when the world price is flat.
